Campiglia Marittima is a medieval village perched on a hill in the Val di Cornia and from its position, the B&B Tos’Camere dominates the entire valley, allowing the gaze to reach the sea and the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. Upon our arrival, we leave the car in the parking area reserved for guests, and within a few steps, we reach Silvia and Renato on the panoramic terrace. This is where the guests are served breakfast in the summer, and throughout the year, it hosts wine, cheese, and local cold cuts tastings, Luca’s barbecued meats, and themed dinners.

“This is the most recent area of our structure, but actually, everything began in 1992 when the main building was little more than a ruin,”
Renato informs us, pointing to the building that houses their residence and the guest rooms.
“That’s when we started the restoration, one step at a time. The first guests began to arrive in 1997, and some have not stopped coming back to ‘the house where it never rains!’ In those years, a lady from Milan described us like this: ‘Renato calls customers guests, and guests become friends‘. This is our character: we are simple and determined, and sharing always comes first for us.”

Silvia and Renato have a son, Luca, and it is also with his contribution and that of his wife Valentina that the B&B has evolved over the years, enriching itself with the Home Restaurant license.

But what is a Home Restaurant?

“It’s a private place that can host paying customers for lunch or dinner. It’s not a regular restaurant because it’s not open every day but operates by reservation or organizes themed evenings at certain times of the year. We use this format to prepare dinners with produce from our garden and our game, as well as barbecue evenings with top-quality Italian meats from our son’s butcher shop, Luca’s Meat.“

Renato was born in Campiglia and loves it with all his heart: he’s proud of its history, its beauty, all it offers in terms of human and scenic value.

What can a tourist interested in a sports holiday in Campiglia Marittima do in the area?

“Everything! Or rather, they have an embarrassment of choices! If you enjoy walking or cycling, there are trekking and bike routes that start not far from here, for example, from the San Silvestro Archaeomineral Park. Our area is expanding the e-bike rental and charging system, and there are also numerous groups of enthusiasts and expert naturalist guides who organize walking or cycling excursions for all levels of fitness.

For example, in May, the Campiglia municipality and the local tourism authority organise the ‘Scampigliata‘, an interesting route through nature, with various refreshment points along the paths.

Those who love the sea will find the most beautiful beaches in the area just a few kilometres away, for swimming, watersports, and diving. The climate is mild for much of the year, so it’s never difficult to find the perfect time to do outdoor physical activities.”

And what can animal lovers do in the area?

“Those arriving with a dog can take it for a walk or visit the local dog beaches. There are stables and riding schools that organise horse rides, and for birdwatching enthusiasts, we recommend a visit to the WWF oasis Padule Orti-Bottagone, where 231 species of birds have been recorded.”.

That’s quite a packed programme!

“Yes, but one can always alternate with a day at the thermal baths or an amusement park, and visits to museums: our territory has precious natural springs that provide well-being and relaxation and numerous places to discover history, art and archaeology. Just in the municipality of Campiglia Marittima, there are two thermal centres, the ‘Terme di Venturina’ and the ‘Calidario Terme Etrusche’ – it’s no coincidence that since 2014, the Venturina district is called Venturina Terme!”

Any final suggestion for those visiting the area?
“Don’t forget to enjoy our culinary tradition: taste wine, oil, cured meats, cheeses, and all the typical dishes of the area. And don’t miss trying the Campiglia ‘schiaccia’, it’s the queen of our desserts. You can diet at home, it would be a pity to miss out on such goodness here!”
